Business Continuity Solution

The Business continuity solution can help the company recover from disasters and achieve the uninterrupted availability of the systems and applications for 7*24 hours.

l  There are more and more integrated information technologies and the business data have developed from dispersion to centralization. As a result, the losses caused by single disaster are becoming greater;

l  In the fierce market competition, it has become harder for users to withstand the losses of the important data and critical business systems caused by downtime.

l  Establish a disaster-tolerant system and develop a disaster recovery plan to achieve the business continuity. It has become increasingly necessary to ensure the availability of critical business processes and information system and reduce the risk associated with downtime.

Hierarchical Division of Business Continuity

Information System Disaster Recovery Specification has defined the business continuity levels from 0-7:

l  Level 0: There is no off-site backup system. The data is only partially and locally recovered. It is not the "disaster" backups in real sense;

l  Level 1: There is data backup but no backup system. The data is usually backed up to magnetic tape and transferred to other places but there is no backup system to recover data;

l  Level 2: There are data backup and backup systems. The data is backed up to magnetic tape and sent to a location with a backup system;

l  Level 3: It is transmitted by electronic link and supported by device. Based on the solution of level 2, the data is transmitted to the backup center through the link after the magnetic tape backup,

l  Forming the integrity data with the magnetic tape; (Magnetic tapes are often used for backup and transmission in the levels from 1-3)

l  Level 4: It is transmitted by electronic link and supported by complete equipment (based on the tape). All the data processing equipment, communication lines and the corresponding network equipment should be equipped for disaster recovery and they must be online or in operational status;

l  Level 5: Transaction Integrity. Asynchronous data mirroring has ensured the data consistency but damaged the data integrity;

l  Level 6: There is a small amount loss of data or no data lost. Remote data mirroring has guaranteed both the data integrity and data consistency ( just like the synchronous replication);

l  Level 7: The solution shall be combined with specific business to achieve the autonomous management and remote data mirroring. And the highly automated system takeover can be done in the business environment.

Data Replication Technology of Business Continuity

The core of business continuity is data replication. On the basis of data preservation, different levels of business continuity are achieved by deploying application systems and business network. At present, the industry has a variety of feasible technologies to accomplish the remote data replication at different levels of the IT architecture, thus achieving the business continuity:

Synchronous replication in transaction level based on the application level;

l Data replication based on the database level;

lData replication based on the server logical disk volumes;

l Data replication based on the exchange level of storage network;

lData replication based on disk array level;

l Other ways of replication.

Choice of Business Continuity Solutions

Measurable Indicators of Business Continuity. RPO and RTO:

1. RPO (Recovery Pomt Objective) refers to the amount of data loss that the business system can tolerate;

2. RTO (Recovery Time Objective) mainly refers to the longest tolerable time that business service suspends, that is, the shortest time period required from the disaster to the recovery of the business system.

There is no inevitable connection between RPO and RTO. The smaller the two indicators, the higher availability the system has and the greater investment it needs.

A manufacturing company establishes the disaster tolerant system with the storage replication.

Client background

Because of the business expansion, a manufacturing company needs to establish the centralized enterprise information system, including ERP, OA, Mail, etc. In addition to the centralized data storage, it is necessary to establish a disaster recovery center to achieve the business continuity.

Scheme design

The production center is 50 kilometers away from the disaster tolerant center. Deploy a homogeneous SAN architecture based on EMC's high-end series of disk arrays in the two centers and apply the remote replication technology based on disk array to arrange appropriate application environment and user environment.

Achieve the higher levels of business continuity. A mix of synchronous and asynchronous methods is implemented for different network environments and application requirements.

User benefits

l  The SAN storage architecture has enhanced the performance of production applications.

l The centralized storage of business data, has improved the efficiency of IT management

lLong-distance backup has strengthened the resistance of disasters.

l Reduce network operating costs by 30%.

Application Level Disaster Recovery Solution of Information Center in the Group Company

Client background

The computer room of a group company information center is consisted of A and B two computer rooms in the same city. One is the main computer room and the other is the standby computer room. Currently there are more than 30 sets of main applications and the related databases. The data required to be copied for disaster recovery is about 2 () TB. It is required to build a disaster discovery center at point C in a different place to achieve the application-level disaster recovery of the service system in the main operation center A. When the disaster occurs in the main operational center, the RPO is required to be less than 10 minutes and the RTO of the disaster recovery data is less than 1 hour.

Scheme design

According to the users' demand, we have made a full use of existing storage technologies by applying EMC's mature RecoverPomt CRR continuous data protection technology to achieve the remote disaster recovery. When the physical equipment failures or logical errors occur in the database, host, storage and application software, the business data security and uninterrupted operation of the system can still be ensured.

As shown in the above figure, the hardware equipment of EMC's Recover-Point data continuous disaster tolerant protection system mainly consists of a proprietary control server RP A and an smart fiber switch. Two smart optical switches are separately configured in the A and B computer rooms of the main production data center as I/O splitting devices. And the two rooms shall be also respectively equipped with a set of RPA, which can not only reach the load balancing of data replication, but also achieve the failover in the process of data replication to ensure security during data replication. In the disaster tolerant center C, two sets of RPAs should be correspondingly equipped for A and B computer rooms. Besides, another four smart fiber switches are also needed.

RecoverPoint CRR devices configured in the main production center and disaster tolerant center can replicate and continuously protect the disk array data.

User benefits

l  It has achieved the continuity protection of user data and any point-in-time recovery.

l  It has solved the difficult problem of data disaster tolerance between different brand storage.

l  It has protected investment and made full use of old resources.

l  The business performance of the main center shall suffer less than 20% of impact under the condition of full-load operation of disaster tolerance.

l  The centralized monitoring and management tools have been provided for easy management and maintenance.
